Tome of Five Centuries
Or: The greatest story ever written. —Allegedly, written beneath the Tome’s title.
Supposedly penned by a friend of several of the Ascended gods, the Tome resides within the Elderwood, the remnants of the great pre-War of Ascension forest. Orc tribes dominate the area, and the Tome is their sole claim to power in world affairs. Its protectors, chosen for life, reside in a citadel atop Grandfather’s Shoulder, a lonely, spectacular mountain.
The book serves as a prophetic timeline of the first half-millennium since the Ascension. It is a collection of allegorical stories, each titled “Year of _____.” The Year of Black Rain is a straightforward example. The names of the years are publicly revealed each year, but the story that accompanies it is a carefully guarded secret. The Tome’s gurdians are very discerning as to who has a chance to figure out what the year’s name entails.
